Our Services

We understand that dealing with financial matters after losing a loved one is complex and can feel daunting. We can assist you or a family member as the Executor of a deceased person’s Estate to deal any or all of the following:

Completing the final personal tax return of the deceased

Helping you collate all the assets and liability of the deceased to assed whether there is any Inheritance Tax (IHT) due and if so how much

Complete tot e form to obtain Probate, so the assets of deceased can then be accessed and distributed

Deal with the Estate Tax Returns to account for any income or gains that arise between the date of death and the final distribution of all assets to the named beneficiaries.

What is more, the cost to the Estate of dealing with all the above matters is almost always substantially lower than where a solicitor deals with these matters. Whilst solicitors often charge a fixed percentage of the value of a person’s Estate, often 2% to 2.5%, we charge based on an hourly rate and will provide an estimate once we have established the size and complexity of the assets within an Estate.

    Frequently asked questions

Probate is the legal process of administering a deceased person’s Estate. It gives the Executor the legal authority to access, manage and distribute the assets of the Estate. Probate is typically required where the deceased held property, significant savings or investments in their sole name.

Whilst it is not a legal requirement, the probate process involves a number of complex financial and tax matters. Having a qualified accountant handle these on your behalf ensures accuracy, reduces the risk of errors with HMRC, and can save the Estate both time and money.

Solicitors typically charge a fixed percentage of the total Estate value, often between 2% and 2.5%. As accountants, we charge based on an hourly rate, which in most cases results in a significantly lower cost to the Estate. We will always provide an estimate upfront once we understand the size and complexity of the Estate.

The length of the probate process varies depending on the size and complexity of the Estate. A straightforward Estate can typically be concluded within 6 to 12 months, whilst more complex Estates involving property, multiple assets or Inheritance Tax can take longer. We will keep you informed throughout the process.

IHT is a tax charged on the value of assets you own when you die (your estate). IHT is also charged on certain gifts made during your lifetime. These may be gifts made within seven years before your death or transfers to discretionary trusts.

A person domiciled in the UK is subject to IHT on all assets, whether they are situated here in the UK or abroad. A person domiciled outside the UK is subject to IHT only on assets situated in the UK. Domicile is a legal concept which is distinct from residence. Residence relates to the country where you currently live. Generally, however, you are domiciled in the country with which you are most closely identified.

Currently, the first £325,000 of a person’s estate is exempt from tax (or more correctly taxed at 0%). This “Nil Rate Band” has been frozen now until April 2028.

It may seem that only the few rich people are affected by IHT. However, many could be facing an IHT liability as a result of the growth in value of their home, a gradual increase in personal wealth and the freezing of the nil rate band.
