Changes to how you file your annual accounts

Aug 5, 2026

Companies House has officially confirmed that the way businesses file their annual accounts is changing. These changes are coming into effect on 1 April 2028, giving you plenty of time to prepare and we’re here to help you every step of the way.

What’s different from April 2028?

Here’s a breakdown of what’s changing and what it means for your business:

  • Profit & loss accounts — If you run a small company or micro-entity, you will now need to file a profit and loss account with Companies House, just like larger companies do.
  • Software filing only — From 1 April 2028, all companies must file their accounts using approved software. The current web and paper filing options will no longer be available for accounts
  • Privacy protection —If you’re a small or micro-entity, you will have the option to opt out of having your profit and loss account published publicly on the Companies House register.

How these changes affect your business

If Aspeys already file your accounts on your behalf, you don’t need to do anything right now. We will be in touch to confirm the software arrangements we will use on your behalf and whether you would like to apply the exception.

If you file your own accounts, you will need to:

  • Understand what type of accounts you need to file.
  • Have your company authentication code ready.
  • Set up a presenter account with Companies House.
  • Move to an approved software package before the deadline.

Your annual accounts preparation checklist

The good news is there’s plenty of time to get ready. Here are a few things worth doing sooner rather than later:

  1. Get in touch with us if you have any questions or concerns.
  2. Keeping an eye out for further updates from us as more details are confirmed by Companies House.

You’re in safe hands

At Aspreys, we make it our business to stay ahead of changes like these so that you don’t have to. We’re already working on how best to support our clients through this transition and will be in contact with more information as things develop.

In the meantime, if you have any questions at all big or small we’d love to hear from you:
