    Frequently asked questions

    You are required to submit a self assessment tax return if you meet the following criteria:

    • self employed as a sole trader and earned more than £1,000
    • a partner in a business partnership

    In addition to this, you may need to submit one if you have any other untaxed income such as:

    • tips & commission
    • money from renting out a property
    • foreign income
    • income from savings, investments and dividends
    • 31st October – last day to file paper tax returns
    • 31st January – last day to file tax returns online

    If it’s your first time submitting a tax return, you’ll need to register at the HMRC website and get a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) number.

    A company tax return needs to be submitted within 12 months of the end of the accounting period it covers.
